How to better Protect Yourself Financially
- Consider filing taxes as married – separately. This may cost you more but may protect you in the event he provides false or missing information. Remember, your signature is stating that what is on the form is correct, and you can be held liable.
- Apply for a credit card in your own name before the divorce is final, if you don’t already have one. It may be more difficult to obtain credit on your own later.
- Be sure adequate health insurance coverage for you and your children will be provided for during and after the divorce.
- Once you are single if you will need to work to provide for yourself, be sure adequate disability insurance protection is in place in the event you become sick or hurt and cannot work.
As always, be sure to discuss this and all issues with your attorney for what is appropriate for your particular situation
